Default Animal Control Investigator ($18 per hr)- Washington, DC

The Washington Humane Society (WHS) is seeking an experienced, detailed orientated Animal Control Investigator (ACI). WHS is the only Congressionally-chartered animal welfare agency in the United States, providing comfort and care to nearly 30,000 animals each year through its broad range of programs and services. WHS operates two open-admission shelters and the National Capital Area Spay and Neuter Center. Noted nationwide for flagship programs like Dog Tags, the PACK (People and Animals Cardio Klub) and the TNR program CatNiPP, WHS is a rapidly growing organization. This full-time position will be located at the District of Columbia Animal Care and Control Shelter and will report to the Director of Animal Control and Field Services.

This position will be tasked with responding to and investigating dog bites, and inspecting the various permitted activities as directed by the DOH. The ACI will work closely with members of DOH and MPD to achieve the goals set forth under this position.

  • Receives and responds to complaints about inappropriate animal behavior, investigating dog bites, enforces rabies vaccination, licensing and dog leash laws; performs euthanasia, quarantines dogs are required. Collects, impounds and cares for animals within the District of Columbia.
  • Issues legal summonses to leash law violators and owners of unvaccinated and unlicensed dogs. Testifies in court on violations regarding issuance of legal summonses to leash law violators.
  • Maintains accurate and complete daily log of all related activities such as calls received for each shift, impoundment, and disposition of animals and prepares reports.
  • Operates vehicle and two-way radio in performance of duties.
  • Experience in developing, managing and motivating a team;
  • Demonstrated expertise in shelter behavior and enrichment programs;
  • A record of strong relationships with customers and other animal protection organizations;
  • A team-oriented and collaborative approach to work, with an ability to bring out the best in peers;
  • Resilience, goal-orientation and an ability to think strategically;
  • Exceptional decision making, interpersonal, communication skills are a must;
  • Strong customer service, probing and reasoning skill are a must
  • Passion for networking with others in the shelter industry and for the Washington Humane Society’s mission.
