Default Caliber used for roadside deer dispatch

I am curious what caliber is mostly used in the field to dispatch injured wildlife?
There are a lot of variables to a field dispatch, where a small caliber such as a .22lr may possibly be less than humane, or require successive shots to complete.

As you stated - the variables are numerous for this type of situation. Anywhere from the location of the a animal, distance and type of injury.

I have dispatched a lot of animals over my career as a humane law enforcement officer and reserve deputy sheriff. I've used all of the tools allotted to me over the course of those years. My service pistol (.40 S&W), back up (9mm), 12 Guage and a .22 caliber rifle.

All have been affective. Most of the time it's not necessarily the caliber but the location of the shot that is most important. The correct shot placement can make up for a less than perfect weapons platform.

Depends on the size of the wildlife you're likely to be working with. A .22LR surely can take care of raccoons, possums, skunks, etc. It can also do the job on deer, but shot placement will be very important to ensure quick death. Also have to consider how close you can get to the deer.

.410 with a slug or even bird shot will do the trick.
