My whole career has been at shelters under the PD. Iíve never been under health, code enforcement or public works, so I wouldnít even know where to begin a comparison. Through PD it is usually a pretty easy operation, because my job description has always been to keep complaints from ever reaching the Chief, Mayor or City Manager. Otherwise they stay out of the way because they are generally clueless about what we do or how we do it. The problems arise when the people who are generally clueless about what we do or how we do it try to micro manage the shelter, or absolute worst case, they have read a book about animal sheltering.

OR, when nobody gives a damn about the department and your ordinances and resources show it.

I have been at my current city just over 2 years now, and I have had 2 City managers, 2 Chiefs of Police and Iím on my 3rd Lieutenant, so it has been a little inconsistent about what we do or do not get. Like everybody else, when they built the shelter 5 years ago they put it as far from city hall as physically possible. When they built the new fire station last year they left no stone unturned, but with the shelter they left no corner uncut.

However, we have 2 trucks, enough catch poles to start our own eBay store, nets, a stretcher and a ramp so I canít complain about the equipment. My first Lieutenant wanted a detailed request for anything we wanted, but he would also just surprise us with stuff on occasion. Some of it was out of his pocket. I have only had my 3rd Lieutenant for about a month now, and we always had a good relationship before her took over, but now we have a great relationship and he is very responsive towards doing the right thing for us..

So on the one hand we have this little utilitarian box of a shelter stuck on a creek bank and the city limit, but the current administration is supportive of us. Kind of an oxymoron, but it works for me.
