Looking for stats on officer safety
I am putting together a proposal for our division to have ballistic vests. I know of a few incidents but am looking for stats for ACO's that have been severly wounded or killed in the line of duty in say the past 5 years. I believe that this would drive the point home. Any assistance is appreciated

Sacramento County ACO Roy Marcum was shot and killed while investigating a report of abandoned dogs in Galt, CA in Novemeber of 2012. I am a City of Sacramento Officer so it is very close to home. Don't know of any others. The way I sold our department on them years ago was the benefit of protection from animals as well. Look at some injuries to the abdomen, breasts/chest, back, etc. caused by dog attacks

I don't believe that anyone keeps track of severe injuries to ACOs. If NACA is doing it, it's not widely known that they're doing it. I've got quite a few documents saved on ACOs being attacked/injured over the past few years but they are far too many to send/e-mail. I can probably burn a disk and mail it to you if you'd like to PM me here with an address to send them to. Line of Duty Deaths for ACOs and others doing work an ACO might be doing can be found here: is the only source for historical Line of Duty Deaths for ACOs. NACA does track ACO LODD back to 1978, however, many ACOs were killed in the line of duty before that.
